Shelf ready packaging: what retailers actually require from a case
The functional requirements behind shelf ready packaging, the formats that meet them, and the structural details that decide whether a case works in store.

Shelf ready packaging exists because of a stopwatch. Every case a store assistant has to cut open, unpack and flatten is time not spent on the shop floor, and every product handled twice is a product that can be damaged twice. Retailers noticed, measured it, and started specifying cases that go from cage to shelf in one movement. For the distributors and manufacturers supplying those retailers, that specification has become a condition of listing.
The five requirements, in the retailer’s words
Most UK grocery specifications trace back to the same framework, usually stated as five things a case must be easy to do.
Easy to identify. Staff replenishing at speed need to recognise the product from the case without opening it. That means clear branding and product description on at least two faces, and enough contrast to read at arm’s length in a back-of-store cage.
Easy to open. One motion, no knife. A perforated tear-strip or a lift-off hood that comes away cleanly without tearing the tray or damaging product inside.
Easy to shelf. The opened tray has to sit stably on the shelf, fit the planogram footprint, and stack if the shelf depth allows. A tray that rocks, overhangs or collapses under the one above will be rejected.
Easy to shop. Product must be visible and reachable once the tray is on shelf. Front lip height is the usual argument here: too high and the shopper cannot see or reach the product, too low and the product falls out in transit.
Easy to dispose. The empty tray and any removed hood should flatten and go into the store’s cardboard recycling without separating materials.
Each retailer publishes its own version of these with dimensions attached, but the intent is the same, and a case designed for one usually needs only minor adjustment for another.
The formats that meet them
Three constructions do most of the work.
Tear-away case. A standard case with a perforated section that removes to expose the product. Simplest to manufacture and often the cheapest, but the perforation has to be engineered carefully: too weak and it splits in transit, too strong and staff go looking for a knife.
Tray and hood. A two-piece pack: a tray that holds the product and a hood that fits over it for transit. The hood lifts off in store and the tray goes on shelf. Strong, tidy on shelf, and the hood carries transit print while the tray carries shelf print.
Open-front tray. For products that are stable in their own packaging, such as cans, jars and cartons, a die-cut tray with a low front lip and no hood. Usually shrink-wrapped for transit.
The details that decide whether it works
The construction is the easy part. Whether a shelf ready case succeeds in store comes down to a handful of structural details that only show up when the case is tested with real product.
- Perforation pattern. Cut-to-tie ratio, the position of the start tab, and whether the tear runs with or across the flute all change how cleanly it opens. This is designed in CAD and proven on a physical sample, not guessed.
- Front lip height. Set by the product height and how it is stacked in the tray. A quarter to a third of the product height is a common starting point, then adjusted on sample.
- Compression strength. The opened tray has to carry the weight of trays above it in the cage and on shelf. Board grade and tray depth are chosen for the stacked load, not the single tray.
- Print position. Shelf-facing panels carry the brand and product name. Transit panels carry the case count, barcode and handling marks. Getting these on the right faces matters more than print quality.
- Case count and footprint. The retailer’s planogram sets the footprint; the case count follows from that and the product size. Changing one changes the other.
Board and print
E flute gives the cleanest print surface and is the usual choice for trays where the shelf-facing panel matters. B flute adds strength for heavier product or deeper trays. Two-colour flexographic print with matched Pantone references covers the branding requirements of most retailer specifications, applied inline so it adds no separate process.
From specification to pallet
A shelf ready project should follow a fixed route. Start with the retailer’s specification and the product itself, not a sketch. Have the format designed in CAD against that specification. Cut a sample, fill it with real product, and test it: drop it, stack it, open it, put it on a shelf. Only then order tooling. Once the specification is signed off, hold it on every repeat run, because the retailer’s store staff will be opening the thousandth case the same way as the first.
For distributors supplying retail, shelf ready packaging is worth specialising in. The requirements are exacting, but they are also stable, and a case that passes one retailer’s audit is a case that will keep selling.
